VIENTIANE, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) — Senior officials
representing 10 countries from across Southeast Asia joined talks in the
Lao capital Friday ahead of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN) Foreign Ministers' Retreat Saturday.
The annual retreat is expected to see renewed commitments among the
10 member states towards progressing the construction of
regionally-integrated economic, political-security and socio-cultural
communities alongside strengthened ties with external partners.
The meetings in Vientiane are the first at ministerial-level held
since the introduction of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) established
across the region as of Dec. 31.
Hosted by Laos as part of its 2016 chairmanship of the regional
grouping, the gathering comes ahead of the ASEAN Summit and related
meetings set for Vientiane in September at which leaders of member
states and several dialog partners are expected to be represented.
